The PhD students in my department are putting together a big postgraduate event looking at Access and Opportunity. At the moment they have John Urry booked in as a key note with more to follow. There is more information and a call for papers on the event website, you can also book your place there. Here is an excerpt of the event description:
This conference aims to bring together early career researchers from across the social sciences whose work examines the extent to which access and opportunity in various cultural, social, political, national and international spheres is limited by issues of inequality and privilege. As the UK and Europe edge out of economic stagnancy, combined with the drastic retrenchment of the state and popular unpopularity of politics and business, the question of a ‘recovery for whom?’ pervades our political discourse.
