How Shazam uses big data to predict the next big artists

Apparently Shazam are making use of the data from their app to make predictions about which songs will be hits. This article gives some description of the process and predictions (thanks to Emma Uprichard for the link). Here we can see how data that accumulates through routine cultural engagements folds back in to cultural consumption. I’m wondering how these predictive analytical nights also be creating future scenarios by shaping the music that people encounter. It’s a really good example of how data and algorithms are active in the social world.
