There are some interesting pieces on the CUCR (Centre for Urban and Community Research) blog. The centre is based at Goldsmiths. The most recent post is a set of reflections by Alex Rhys Taylor on his recent work in urban sounds. Alex’s work focuses on the sensory experience of the city, include smell and visual sociology. In this post he focuses on the urban soundscape, or what Rowland Atkinson has called the ‘sonic ecology’. Alex’s piece describes a paper he recently presented that experimented with recording the sounds of the city, and then uses the sound to unpick the history of urban processes. The blog post includes an audio recording of a city space that has been captured in 3D. Sounds like a really interesting experiment that gets at the neglected sonic properties of urban spaces.
