Apparently it’s 60 years since the launch of the New Musical Express, or the NME as it is more commonly known. They’ve done well to last this long with the changes to music culture and publishing. I’m not sure how central the NME is today in shaping music tastes and movements. It certainly used to be important. In the past though it was one of the few places for music news. Now it’s everywhere. But the NME is woven into British musical history, and it played it’s part in all sorts of scenes. I certainly remember, when it used to be a newspaper rather than a magazine, that it was important to what became known as britpop in the mid 90s.
